Featured Speaker: Picture the Mirror: What do I see? What do you see?
They say people see you the way you see yourself, but what if growing up you're confused about what you see. Come listen to how I was blessed and supported by extraordinary people who helped me overcome adversity and showed me how to navigate a complex system and become one with the man in the mirror.

Starting with Strengths: Supporting Our ELL Students Through an Asset-Based Lens
Often our ELL students are seen through a deficit lens. Instructional decisions are then based on what the students are not yet able to do instead of recognizing what they are capable of and what strengths they bring as a multilingual student. This can result in inappropriate remediation and referrals for special education services. We need to better understand the strengths of our ELL students in order to provide opportunities for their participation in collaborative, engaging, and cognitively challenging learning. This session will provide you with processes and tools that educators can use to provide appropriate Tier 1 instruction as well as some targeted interventions. We will also share our district’s process for referring an ELL student for Special Education services.

The Ideology and Dichotomy of my Brown Mom, and my White Mom
Growing up without father, I was blessed with my biological mother and a school teacher that made a huge impact in my life. Both moms offered me their unique prospective that often made me question and challenge my belief and value system. Come listen and discover ways YOU can help students navigate their way through the educational system, as they may not have a Brown Mom or a White Mom.

The EL Teacher's Approach to Using OCDE Project GLAD(R) Strategies
Ever wondered how OCDE Project GLAD(R) strategies can support English learners specifically within a designated ELD block or in a co-teaching setting? Have you wanted to use the strategies from OCDE Project GLAD(R) to teach language structures and forms that respond to the functions in the content? The OCDE Project GLAD(R) strategies are dynamic, adaptable and can be used to teach the forms that correspond to the language functions within grade-level content standards. Through a short cycle of strategies, frequent formative assessments and keeping language at the forefront of content, you will learn how EL teachers can effectively use OCDE Project GLAD(R) strategies to ensure that your ELD block can help close the opportunity gap, and ensure equal access to grade-level content.
